GEORGE “MIKE” BARTON
1933 – 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George "Mike" Allan Barton, who passed away peacefully at Pioneer Lodge in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, at the age of 90 years. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Pioneer Lodge for the compassionate care Mike received during his time there.
Mike faced many challenges in the last eight years, particularly after the passing of his beloved wife, Pat, on November 1st, 2016, and his battle with Parkinson's Disease. Despite these difficulties, he remained resilient and surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Mike was predeceased by his wife, Pat; and survived by his sister, Barbara Eagles, of Calgary, Alberta; children, Jay Barton and Candace Barton; and his cherished grandchildren: Tiffany, Regan, Riley, Caitlyn, and Ryan. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Dane and Peytan, whom he loved dearly and with whom he shared many joyful memories.
Born in Admiral, Saskatchewan, Mike was the son of George and Pearl Barton. His family later moved to Caron, SK where he spent his carefree childhood and met his future wife, Pat. Together, Mike and Pat built a life in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, raising their two children in a home filled with love, laughter, and adventure.
Mike lived a life full of diverse passions and talents. He was a licensed pilot, an avid restorer of classic cars, and a skilled musician who delighted his family by playing the guitar and singing for his children and grandchildren. He found joy in creating — whether it was through his artistic pursuits, crafting concrete sculptures, or building brickwork. His hands were never idle, as he always had projects on the go, including the annual skating rink at Buffalo Pound Lake where his grandchildren spent countless days skating and playing hockey.
Mike and Pat cherished their time at Buffalo Pound, which eventually became their permanent home after retirement. It was here that they welcomed family and friends, creating a lifetime of memories at their cabin by the lake.
Mike's professional life was one of deep commitment and pride. He began his career with the Moose Jaw Fire Department in 1964 and he dedicated nearly three decades of service, retiring in 1992. Over the years, Mike rose through the ranks, eventually becoming Fire Chief of Moose Jaw. He held a special place in his heart for the brotherhood he found at the Fire Hall, and the camaraderie he shared with his colleagues lasted long after his retirement. His infamous "End of The Year Pool Parties" are fondly remembered by all who attended. Mike was grateful for the lasting friendships and visits from his fellow firefighters, who continued to support him in his later years.
In addition to his distinguished career, Mike was an active and generous member of his community. He was deeply involved with the Rotary Club and the Salvation Army Church, always willing to lend a helping hand or volunteer his time. Mike's warmth, kindness, and love for his family left a lasting impact on those who knew him. He had a special bond with his nieces and nephews, and his niece Cheryl, who lived with the family for many years, held a unique place in his heart. Her support was a great comfort to both Mike and Pat in their later years.
Mike Barton was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and caring brother, uncle, and friend. He touched many lives with his generosity, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, service, and kindness will endure.
