Ruth Predy

Ruth Predy passed away at the Canora Gateway Lodge on December 13, 2024, at the age of 102 years.

Ruth was born on December 24, 1921, in the family farmhouse, south of Canora, SK. Her parents were Carrie (nee Rymar) and Peter Malanovich.  She attended school at East Scala in the country, having to walk a mile each way.  Although she loved school and wanted to continue, her father said no after she completed Grade 8.

She married George John Predy on October 16, 1942, after having met him while he was a suit salesman who came to the farm to measure her father for a new suit.  The suit, when it arrived for her father, had sleeves that were too short because George had been distracted by her while measuring.  Their early dates consisted of her going along with him, opening and closing gates, while he did his job.  They settled in Canora after marrying and raised four children. George passed away on January 26, 2013.

As a young girl, her first job was as a nanny for a family friend in Winnipeg, MB. When she returned to Canora, she worked as a telephone operator before she married and had children. Later she worked for the Eaton catalogue office for many years. Ruth was very talented at crafts, painting, crocheting, sewing, knitting and making pysanky eggs. The Gateway Lodge hired her to be their Activity Director, and she worked at that position for 8 years.  Her other interests were reading and gardening.  She was a great cook, who always had many requests from her children & grandchildren, for her specialties when they came to visit.

Ruth played on a softball team as a young girl, curled for many years and golfed as well.  She was active in Canora community life: a member of the Joy of Singing group, United Church women's group, church choir and volunteered at the library, the nursing home, taught Sunday school and supported all the activities of her children, in school and the community.

Time during summer vacations and post retirement, was spent on some travelling, Europe, Maritimes, Arizona and Texas as well as many other Canada and US trips. Many memories were made at the Crystal Lake cottage where we lived during the summer months.

In her later years, Ruth enjoyed a peaceful life. She had great enjoyment from her family visitors and her friends in the personal care home.  Scrabble games always highlighted these visits. One of Mom’s pictures has her playing Scrabble with three generations of family members.  We will all cherish these precious times together with her.

She was predeceased by both her parents; her brothers, Lloyd, Mike, Joe, and John; and she is survived by her sister, Jeannie. Ruth also leaves behind her children: Elizabeth Predy, Victoria, BC; Ronald (Elizabeth) Predy, Canora, SK; Linda (Allen) Ruemper, Cochrane, AB; and Patrick Predy, Saskatoon, SK; grandchildren:  Lisa (Kevin) Olive, Brandon, MB; Christine (Duane) Mackie, Chilliwack, BC; Alia Ruemper, Cochrane, AB; Logan Predy (Holly Kaupa), London, ON; Linden (Kyla) Predy, Saskatoon, SK; and her great-grandchildren: Michael Olive (Abby Carroll), Matthew Olive, Sarah (Josh) Wiens, Kascia-Maria, Katylyna-Maria & Krispin-Joseph Predy.

A mother holds her children's hands for awhile......their hearts forever.  To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. Death is more universal than life, everyone dies but not everyone lives.   -A. Sachs

A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 3, 2025, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, with Tricia Challoner officiating. Interment followed at the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK.
