Tony Hladyboroda passed away peacefully at the Canora Hospital on January 3, 2025, at the age of 92 years.
Tony was born on the farm near Mikado and attended Bogucz School No. 1753, near the family farm. As an avid reader, learning for Tony was a lifelong passion.
Tony would likely have liked to be remembered first as a farmer, but his entire life is highlighted with dedication and involvement with the Church, community organizations and business interests, not the least of which was his involvement in the corporate world of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.
Those who knew Tony will fondly recall his incredible singing voice and love of classical literature and music. His principle method of interaction was to engage in conversations on any topic that challenged his audience to think as deeply as he did.
Those who encountered Tony will smile to recall his unique way of answering the most basic of questions. For example, staff at the grocery store learned his Co-op number by reciting how many yards there are in a mile. The subtly of Tony’s quiet demeanor, wit, and sense of humour is marked by some of his most endearing features – a silent smirk punctuated with melt-your-heart blue eyes.
Tony was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Victoria Hladyboroda; brothers, Bohdan, Bill, and Peter; sisters Verna and Natalie; sister-in-law, Lena; brothers-in-law, Mike and Eddie; and his companion of 22 years, Gail Hrywkiw.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his sister, Mary Blum of Saskatoon, SK; 10 nieces and nephews and their families; and the family of the late Gail Hrywkiw.
A Prayer Service was held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 9, 2025, and the Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2025, both from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Yurii Obukh officiating. Interment followed at the Donwell Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, north of Donwell, SK. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to a Charity of Donor’s Choice, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Tony Hladyboroda. Family and friends are invited to sign an online guestbook at www.lesonsfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements have been entrusted to LESON’S FUNERAL HOME, Canora, SK.
