Maxine Elizabeth Curts (Gamracy) (nee Butler)
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Maxine Elizabeth Curts (Gamracy) (nee Butler) announces her passing on 20 September 2024, two days before her 95 Birthday.
Born to parents Edward and Marie Butler in 1929, on a farm near Loreburn, Sask, Maxine was the fourth in a family of thirteen children. After struggling to make a living on the farm the family moved to Moose Jaw where Maxine got her first paying job working for Moose Jaw Woolen Mills.
In 1946 Maxine met and married John Gamracy, a young farmer-engineer from Yorkton Sask. They were married for 56 years and had four children: Sandra (Wayne) Brattley, Wayne Gamracy, Margaret Brooks, and Debra (Don) Higgins.
Maxine was blessed with eight wonderful grandchildren: Tanya (George) Schnell, Darcy (Brent) Lorge, Jason Brattley, David (Cheryl) Brattley, Andrea (Doug) Posdon, Nigel Gamracy, Devyn (Kurt) Flesher and Dan (Yuki)Brooks. She was great grand-mother to fifteen and great- great- grandmother to two. Maxine was predeceased by her youngest granddaughter Devyn Flesher, her parents and eight of her brothers and sisters.
Maxine was involved with the Elk’s Royal Purple, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Lynbrook Golf Club for a number of years. She was always up for a game of cards or putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Reading was probably her favourite pastime; she always had a book in hand into the wee hours of the morning until failing eyesight made reading difficult. She loved to garden, had an affinity for budgie birds and motivated us not to fear trying home renovations on our own. She was a determined and independent woman, who inspired many of us to follow in her footsteps.
Later in life Maxine married Gordon Curts and moved to Indian Head, Sask. making new friends and doing a fair bit of travelling across Canada. After Gordon’s passing, she returned to Moose Jaw where she spent her final years.
The family would like to thank the staff at Providence Place Guardian Grove for the care and support received over the last two years.
In keeping with Maxine’s wishes a private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Moose Jaw Funeral Home, 268 Mulberry Lane. Gary McDowell, Funeral Director 306-693-4550 www.moosejawfuneralhome.com
