We are saddened to announce the passing of Edmonton filmmaker Ben Babchishin, formerly of Preeceville, Saskatchewan.
Born to Victor and Albina (Tataryn) Babchishin on October 14, 1960, Benjamin James Babchishin loved growing up on the prairies and also had his eye on the bright lights. He studied radio and television arts at Mount Royal in Calgary and launched his career at television stations in Medicine Hat, Prince George, Lethbridge, London (Ont.), Regina and Edmonton.
While in Prince George, he met his creative match in his future wife Silvana Bernardo and together they curated many years of new adventures with their treasured circle of friends. Whether it was one of their wacky theme parties at home or an evening stroll in Havana, they were determined to make ordinary moments memorable.
After several years as the Creative Director with CTV Edmonton, Ben decided to branch out, first with Big Picture Productions and later as the owner of Hired Gun Films.
Entering every room with a burst of creative energy, Ben was widely known for his edgy slogans, his curly mane and distinct goatee, his ever-present signature hats, and his big personality.
Ben produced many commercial projects but was particularly known for his insightful short films, nationally-broadcast documentaries, web series, and feature-length documentary – all of which challenged us to look at our world differently.
His love of all film genres was matched only by his endless knowledge and appreciation of good music, which brought him to volunteer annually at the folk music festival and inspired many hilarious road trips with his friends to see their favourite bands in concert, from the Rolling Stones to Skid Row to John Prine.
While he brought his unique humour and irreverent attitude to almost every situation, including his recent health struggles, Ben had a serious side where he showed compassion and uncommon understanding to those who needed his support. He was an abiding friend.
A giving and attentive son, Ben was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Albina. He is missed and deeply loved by many friends, cherised family and colleagues in Edmonton and across the country.
A Celebration of Ben’s Life will be scheduled at a later date in Edmonton and a private gathering will follow in Saskatchewan.
"In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival Society, Second Chance Animal Rescue Society, or Heart and Stroke Foundation."
