Norman Frederick Covey, beloved husband of Marlene (Yung/Dick) Covey, passed away on December 13, 2024, at Preeceville Long Term Care. He was 88 years of age.
Norman was born May 16, 1936, the first child of Bernice (Vern) and Martha (Krenbrenk) Covey at Empress, Alberta. Norman moved with his parents to the Endeavour District in the fall of 1937. Due to the tough times of the dirty thirties, and the Second World War the family moved to Flin Flon in 1943 to find work. In 1948 the family was able to move back to the Endeavour area and purchased a quarter of land.
Norman attended school in Flin Flon, Endeavour and Midland School. After he left school, he worked on various local farms and in the bush in the winter. In 1955, he was able to purchase his first quarter of land which set his future path as a farmer. In 1957, he returned to Flin Flon and got a job with Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. He worked mining at Flin Flon, Snow Lake and a short time at Thompson and Lanigan mines. During these years holidays and weekends were spent at Endeavour clearing and working the land with his father.
March 1984 saw the biggest change in his life when he married Marlene (Yung) Dick of Abernethy, a widow with two teenage sons. They made their home in Abernethy, farming both the land at Endeavour and the land at Abernethy for six years. Their theme song became “On the Road Again”! In 1990 Norman and Marlene bought an RTM home from Yorkton and moved it into Preeceville where they resided until the fall of 2023.
Norman loved farming and working the land. He enjoyed curling in his younger days, dancing, fishing, hunting and camping. In his retirement he took up wood working, reading and feeding the birds.
Norman leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife of 40 years, Marlene; step-son, Kelvin (Shirley) and their children, Dalton and Chelsey (Lance), and their daughter, Alethea; step-daughter-in-law, Denise and son, Shayne; nieces, Marilyn (Owen) Dennis and Maureen (Todd) Broadbent; brother-in-law, Ken (Delores) Yung and their children, Murray and Les; sister-in-law, Elaine Hack and her children, Rhonda, Yvonne, Brenda and Dean. Norman is predeceased by his parents, Vern and Martha; sisters, Alice (Richard) Scharfenberg, and Nelda (Joe) Myden; step-son, Norman Dick; brother-in-law, Erwin Hack.
Norman will be missed by all who knew him. Funeral Services were held on December 17, 2024, at St. James Anglican Church, Endeavour, SK, with Phyllis Verbeek and Kathy Ambrose officiating. Gaylene Palagian and Lennette Geistlinger read the scripture. Marilyn Dennis sang “It is Well with My Soul”. Debbie Blender played the piano for the singing of the hymns ‘In the Garden’, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’ and ‘The Far Side Banks of Jordan’. The interment followed in the St. George Ypres Cemetery with Dalton Dick, Kelvin Dick, Shayne Dick, Barry Rieder, Owen Dennis and Gordon MacDonald serving as casket bearers.
