William Solohub

William Solohub: August 19, 1934 – January 17, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Solohub, a loving Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa.

Bill was born along with his twin brother Joe on August 19,1934, on the home farm east of Alticane (near Hafford) SK to Peter and Kateryna Solohub. He grew up in a 3 room house with his parents, 3 brothers and 5 sisters. He left home at the age of 16 and held various jobs. He started out working for an electrical company in the North Battleford area, then moved on to a custom harvesting crew. He left the area for Regina in the early 50’s and joined his older brother John at Olynyk Construction laying water and sewage lines in many towns across Saskatchewan. He worked for Olynyk for 14 years, with the last 8 years being the foreman of the crew. While working in Regina, Bill met Edith while laying the pipeline on the street she lived on. Her Grandma had told her that she should go meet the guy that was driving the fancy blue and white ‘56 Dodge car. They married in Regina on Feb. 8, 1958. Eighteen months later, they were blessed with their first child, Kathy. Two years later, Don was born and then Teresa. In 1966, while laying the water and sewer lines in Unity, Bill was offered the job of Town Foreman.

He quickly accepted. In February 1966, they packed up and moved to Unity where they built the home Edith still resides in. They were blessed with two more children, Vivian and Wayne.

Bill was a big part of the community. He was a member of the Unity Fire Department for 17 years, he served on the school board, was a member of the Knight’s of Columbus, and after retirement, he served on town council for 12 years. On July 29, 1994, after 28 1\2 years as Town Foreman, Bill retired. He was one of the lucky ones to have 30 years of good retirement!

Bill was never one to sit idle though, so his early retirement was quite busy. He drove many vehicles for UMP, drove truck at harvest, and also made many chicken runs for the local hatchery. He loved to bowl and to this day, we believe he still holds the high score in Cut Knife.

Camping and fishing with family was also one of his favourite things to do, as well as playing Kaiser, crib or just a game of Solitaire to pass his days. He loved to golf with his friends and was very proud of his 2 hole-in-ones! It wasn’t always about beating his score though, he used to brag about how quick he could do a round. This would make more time to spend in his

garden or trimming his trees to perfection. He was also a sports fan, whether it was watching the Blue Jays and the Oilers, or cheering on his grandkids at sports. Bill was proud of all 10 of his grandchildren and also got to share in the joy of his 14 great-grandchildren. He was fortunate to stay in his home until June 2024. After a brief illness, he moved to Kindersley Manor where he resided til he left us, on January 17, 2025, at the age of 90.
