Ministry of Social Services reports $50,000 loss

Former government employee charged with fraud and identity theft.

A three-year government employee has been fired after $47,985.44 in Saskatchewan Income Support and Transitional Employment Allowance benefits were paid out.

REGINA — The Ministry of Social Services is working to recover nearly $50,000 misappropriated through fraud by an employee of the government.

According to the most recent quarterly reports on losses of public money within government ministries and Crown corporations, for the period from July 1, 2024, to Sept. 30, 2024, a client of the ministry received $47,985.44 in Saskatchewan Income Support and Transitional Employment Allowance benefits while falsely claiming to be unemployed.

The incident was reported to the police. The employee has been charged with fraud and identity theft and has been terminated. The individual had been employed by the government for almost three years.
