SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation announced on Friday afternoon that on May 15 and 16, they will vote on giving the executive a mandate to implement sanctions beyond the current school year. The existing mandate, voted on in October of 2023, expires on June 30 of this year.
The STF media release said it must prepare for the possibility that the current impasse could continue into the next school year. The mandate resulting from the upcoming sanctions vote will be in effect until an agreement is reached, says the STF.
“For reasons that are beyond understanding, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan School Boards Association seem committed to dragging this process out as long as they can, leaving students, teachers, families and the education sector in limbo,” says STF President Samantha Becotte.
This week, the STF voted against an offer of wage increases of three per cent in the first and second years, followed by a two per cent raise in the third year and the government’s pledge to follow through on a commitment of more funding for classroom supports, but teachers want that language written into the contract.
