REGINA - High school students from Sask. got a first-hand taste of auto body work courtesy of Sask Polytechic.
In partnership with the Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre (Sask DLC), the school provided a one-day camp for those interested in the sector.
"This is a really great opportunity," said Minister of Education Everett Hindley.
Hindley mentioned over 200 students registered for Sask DLC's Autobody courses in the 2024-25 school year, including 62 with work placements.
He was encouraged by those numbers, seeing as Sask. auto body sector needs more workers. He pointed out that the gap in vacancies is increasing primarily from people retiring or leaving the sector.
Hindley believes experts in the industry can pass the torch onto the next generation of workers.
One of those high-school students interested in the industry is Noah Neudorf, a Grade 10 student.
Neudorf wants to follow in the footsteps of his dad, who is a mechanic.
He called this camp " a great experience." Neudorf mentioned the difficulty of the job, including doing body work.
During the camp, Neudorf learned to pull out dents, tearing out the metal of a vehicle and putting it back together and more.
After completing high school, Neudorf plans to take a mechanics apprenticeship in Saskatoon.
His dream is to open up a tire-change shop similar to the one seen in Cars.
