WEYBURN - A local pianist who grew up near Weyburn, Meagan Milatz, has been awarded one of the largest prizes in Canada and the world for emerging artists in classical music.

The Mécénat Musica Prix Goyer prize, which honours Jean-Pierre Goyer, a Canadian cabinet minister and the Chairman of the Conseil des Arts de Montreal who played a role in shaping music across Canada, bestows its recipient with a cash prize. Milatz herself has been awarded $125,000 for the prize for 2025-2028.

Milatz has emerged as an exceptional pianist among her peers, playing alongside top international musicians, including Andrew Wan, who is the concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and Stefan Dohr, the Principal Horn of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Her skills led her to be awarded the Prix Opus "Discovery of the Year" in 2024. Additionally, CBC recognized her in their "30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30."

Residents in Sask. can see Milatz perform with the Regina Symphony Orchestra on March 1 at the Darke Hall.
