SASKATOON — Various cause-oriented groups and individuals will hold an Earth Action Day Rally on Saturday, April 26, to advocate for urgent climate action, increased investments in renewable energy, and a transition that ensures no one is left behind in Saskatchewan.
Concerned citizens, community leaders, unions, workers, students, and environmental and climate organizers will gather at 1 p.m. at the corner of Saskatchewan Crescent East and Clarence Avenue at the University Bridge, followed by a program at Kinsmen Park at 2 p.m.
The rally will highlight four core demands:
- Green, affordable, and reliable energy for all. Saskatchewan has not transitioned to clean energy sources sufficiently. Saskatchewan remains one of the top emitters per capita in Canada.
- Indigenous leadership and reconciliation are at the heart of climate action, ensuring their voices are heard during consultations. Pre-approved energy projects are a step in the wrong direction and will undoubtedly land the provincial government in court again.
- Fair wages, job security for workers, and a just transition to a clean energy economy for communities dependent on fossil fuels.
- Protection for vulnerable communities, including families, youth, seniors, and the unemployed.
One of the organizers, Sherry Olson, said the Earth Action Day rally is a gathering with compassion and purpose beyond the province.
“As neighbours, as a province, and as a country, to face the climate crisis with courage and care. Saskatchewan has a real opportunity to lead by example, embracing clean energy and supporting people through this transition with fairness and heart,” said Olson.
Participants are encouraged to bring signs and come prepared to raise their voices for a more sustainable and equitable future.
