Police use Air Support Unit to help stop suspects

SASKATOON - Two men are facing 18 weapons-related charges after they allegedly fled from police on Friday night.

At 11:30 p.m., March 14, Saskatoon police officers observed a white SUV in the area of Avenue P South and 20th Street West. The SPS Air Support Unit observed it travelling at high rates of speed as it continued south, out of the city.

Using technology equipped to the plane, officers observed the occupants of the vehicle discarding items as they continued to evade police. These items were later found to include a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, and a can of bear spray.

Stop sticks were successfully deployed by members of the RCMP south of Blaine Lake, and two men, ages 26 and 33, were taken into custody.

Both men are charged with Possession of Stolen Property Over $5,000, Possession of Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition, Unauthorized Possession of Firearm, Careless Use of a Firearm, Tampering with Serial Number, Possession of Dangerous Weapon, Unauthorized Possession in Motor Vehicle, and Possession Contrary to Order.

The 26-year-old driver faces additional charges of Dangerous Driving, and Fail to Stop.
