The City of Estevan has added to the number of locations where people are encouraged to take a selfie in the community.

The Experience Estevan Selfie Spot was launched in July, and will highlight Estevan’s best places to take a selfie while promoting local attractions.

A sticker was applied to the ground at various attractions, with foot marks on it to indicate the best location and angle for people to stand to take the selfie. After they take a photo of themselves at that attraction, they are asked to share it on social media with the Experience Estevan hashtag, which the city has been promoting since last year.

Rebecca Westling, the destination marketing and communications consultant for the City of Estevan, said the city has added a couple of outdoor locations and some indoor sites for the Selfie Spots. One is among the displays at the Souris Valley Museum.

“It’s near a spot that’s hairy,” Westling said with a laugh.

Another is at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum that allows people to take a selfie with Ida Petterson, who was the first female mayor of a Saskatchewan city back in the 1970s.

Another selfie spot is the disc golf course at Torgeson Park.

“This is a great time of year to play a round of disc golf over at Torgeson Park. It’s cooler, the weather is a little bit easier to handle … in the daytime, so playing disc golf is a great way to go and get outside in the fall,” said Westling.

Selfie Spots have been added on the walking path along Fourth Avenue South, and at Estevan Bowl.

Attractions that were showcased through the Selfie Spot in the summer included Affinity Place, Woodlawn Regional Park’s Boundary Dam beach site, a walking bridge for the Woodlawn Regional Park’s Souris River site, the Estevan Motor Speedway and the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course. Those are still in place.

Westling said the Selfie Spot has had a positive reaction from the community.

“Once people get the hang of it and what they’re meant to do and meant to be, it’s kind of a snowball effect that people find where the best spot to take a selfie is, and what the best things are to feature our city,” said Westling. “So the response has been great.”

People have tagged the city in their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter posts using the Experience Estevan and Selfie Spot hashtags, and the city has lots of different activities.

Westling has seen selfies of people watching a hockey game at Affinity Place, or taking a break from riding their bikes or playing a round of golf.

“The parks have been quite popular, so I’m interested to see what some of these other indoor locations are going to be like, and how people are going to share those selfies at those indoor locations,” said Westling.

The city has plans to add other sites through the Selfie Spot promotion, and Westling said it will continue to be offered as long as people are using it.
