The Weyburn Public Library has set their programs and events for the month of January, for all ages and interests, in addition to the regular programs such as storytime for children, or the adults book club. (The photos show some of the fun had at the library in the past year, with lots of fun to come in January.)
Special features for families include a green screen night on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m., where people of any age can come and see a demonstration of how green screen special effects work.
Family Literacy Day will be held on Monday, Jan 27, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and is open to all ages. The library will be holding a Hawaiian luau during the day, which people can drop in for at any time with various activities set up.
There will be a couple of family matinees also held this months, with “Curious George” to be shown on Saturday, Jan. 18, and “The Lorax” on Jan. 25, both at 2 p.m.
There are a couple of opportunities for children to learn about cooking, with a kids cooking class for children aged six to eight years on Tuesday, Jan. 14, where they will make pizza quesadillas, and then the Junior Chef class on Monday, Jan. 21 for children aged nine to 12. Both of these sessions are after school, from 3:45 to 5 p.m.
For the gamers in the family, there will be adventure gaming after school every Wednesday for those aged seven to 12, with games available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, along with various board games. There will also be gaming available each Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
There will also be a Code Club 2020, with one for those aged five to eight years on Monday, Jan. 20, at 6:30 p.m., and for those aged eight to 12 on Thursday, Jan. 23 and 30 at 4 p.m.
The younger club will learn about using code-and-go robot mice, and how to program them to follow mazes and avoid traps. The older group will learn to code Sphero robots, work on projects and build something awesome.
For teens, there will be a do-it-yourself clipboard on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 4 p.m., where participants can tailor it to their own liking to use as a clipboard or vision board. A teen cooking club session will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 4 p.m., where they will learn to make turkey Panini.
The teen book club will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m., where they will share some poetry, and will work on “Found Poetry” and button pins.
A program for teens and adults is a watercolour painting class, set for Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m., with all supplies to be provided to the participants.
Two special events will be held at the library this month, including the screening of an NFB film, “We Will Stand Up”, on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. This is being held in collaboration with the Weyburn Arts Council, as this documentary film on the shooting of Colten Boushie will be shown and a discussion period will follow. No registration is required for this event.
A Kairos blanket exercise program will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Weyburn library. Registration for this event is required by Jan. 22 at www.southeastdistrict.ca/event-calendar/post/kairos-blanket-exercise.
Other adult programs include “Trash to Treasure” on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m., where participants can make a “winter sweater wreath”, and winter décor on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2:30 p.m., using a cricut machine. A crafternoon session will be held on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m., making mittens, and a craftereve session at 6:30 p.m. making slipper socks, both to give new life to old sweaters.
An adult cooking class will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21, with sessions at 2:30 or 6:30 p.m., and they will make sweet and spicy “Turkey Curry”.
A watercolours class will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m., and a meeting of the adults book club will go on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m., discussing the book, “An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth”, by Chris Hadfield.
Next month, the book to be discussed will be “Educated” by Tara Westover. Copies of the book are available at the front desk, or can be obtained through e-resources.
