Weyburn student part of winning engineering team at competition

Weyburn student Sabrina Mainil was part of a team of engineering students from the University of Saskatchewan who placed well at the Canadian Mining Games held in Halifax during the February break.

Weyburn student Sabrina Mainil was part of a team of engineering students from the University of Saskatchewan who placed well at the Canadian Mining Games held in Halifax during the February break.

The Canadian Mining Games is an annual academic competition held throughout Canadian universities during the February break. This year, the games were hosted by Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Games involved 26 academic challenges and hands-on competitions between individual students or teams from the 11 participating universities. The Geological Engineering and Chemical Engineering programs sent a team of 16 delegates to compete in the event on behalf of the University of Saskatchewan.

Overall, the U of S team had a great showing at the competition, with five podium finishes and eighth over-all placement. The U of S extended congratulations to all 16 students who worked hard, played hard, and represented the colleges with pride and prowess.

The 2020 U of S Canadian Mining Games team included a first-place finish by Sabrina Mainil and Colton Laroque in the Sustainable Development category; second place, Jackleg Drilling category; second place, Mechanical Design category; third place, Mineral Identification category; and third place for the Promine Challenge.

The U of S Mining Games team had a number of sponsors who provided support for the team to attend the 2020 Games: Gold: CIM Saskatoon, BGC Engineering Inc., and Graham; Silver: IMII International, Syncrude, SSR Mining, APEGS, Suncor, Teck, Epiroc, Saskatchewan Mining Association, Vermilion Energy, and Canshale; Bronze: Combined Metal Industries, GMR Electric Motors, and DSI Underground.

The 2020 U of S Canadian Mining Games Team included Cameron Danroth, Colton Laroque, Sabrina Mainil, Jarrett Lang, Nathaniel Kozicki, Latham Hamlin, Mark Jones, Brayden Hill, Blake Woroniuk, Tristin McDonald (Co-Captain), Johnny Shynkaruk, Lauren Shyluk, Megan Nivon, Carolina Ramirez, Michael Tremblay, Coleman Tyler (Co-Captain).
