With the cancellation of this year’s Mayor’s Cleanup, the Weyburn Youth Council is encouraging the community to come together in a different way to tidy-up.

From June 15-19, Weyburn Youth Councillors will be doing their part by collecting and disposing of litter around their homes, along trails and in parks and public spaces. The Youth Council encourages residents and businesses to do the same.
“With the unfortunate reality of the COVID-19 restrictions, some of our wonderful events have been cancelled this year. However, in an incredible act of community our Youth Council has come up with a great way to improve our beautiful city while staying safe,” said Coun. Jeff Richards, who sits as an advisor on the Weyburn Youth Council.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this will not be an organized eventand instead an online campaign to spread awareness and promote cleaner cities. Participants are encouraged to focus on collecting litter in public spaces and neighbourhoods as individuals or in small groups from the same household.
Unlike the Mayor’s Cleanup, items such as brooms, shovels and wheelbarrows will not be provided. Please contact the City of Weyburn Parks Dept. at (306) 848-3290 to organize pick-up of bagged litter if public bins are full.

SAFETY DURING COVID-19
In accordance with Saskatchewan Health Authority guidelines, participants are encouraged to clean up as individuals or in small groups of people from the same household. Please maintain a distance of two metres between people and no more than 10 people in the area at a time.
Those choosing to participate should also follow these additional guidelines provided by the local public health authority:
• No mass gatherings (two to three people max is strongly encouraged).
• If children are participating, ensure adult supervision.
• No “wind-up” or smaller activities shall be held.
• Communication will be done electronically to maintain physical distance. Proper equipment including gloves, masks, closed-toed shoes, hand sanitizer, garbage bags, pickers, sticks, brooms and dust pans should be used.
Participants collecting litter in their neighbourhood along sidewalks and back alleys can dispose of it with the household garbage in their refuse cart.
Below are designated public spaces with city garbage bins, which the Youth Council encourages residents to explore and clean-up: Tatagwa Trails; City of Weyburn public parks; and Souris River bank
The Weyburn Youth Council also encourages downtown businesses to clean up outside their properties. Litter can be disposed in the public bins located around downtown. Disposal of large items in public bins is prohibited; the focus of the Weyburn Youth Council Cleanup campaign is on litter.
