The Carlyle Cardinals will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame this summer under the team category.
While the Cardinals are currently mainstays in the Saskota Baseball League, the sport of baseball has had a long history in the Carlyle area, with the Carlyle Lakers playing in the Moose Mountain League during the 1930s.
Very few men remained in the area during the two World Wars, but once those ended the sport flourished. In 1959, Carlyle hosted an international baseball tournament and in 1963 the town hosted Satchel Paige’s all star barnstorming team. Carlyle won the 1971 and 1974 league championships, advancing to provincials in that last year.
The Carlyle Astros entered the South East Saskatchewan League in 1981, playing at Lions Park, and the current Cardinals club entered the league in 1993 and have won the league, now known as the Saskota Baseball League, championship 12 times since 1997. The Cardinals have won provincials six times and in 2016 they won the Saskatchewan Senior Baseball Team of the Year award.Â
The Cardinals finished first in the Saskota League’s regular season standings in 2017 with a 12-3-3 record and have finished first in the league standings every year since 2010, when they finished a game and a half behind the Estevan Tower Wolves.
