“It’s always a challenge, and the sociability of the people you’re with,” says Ian Kelln, when asked what his favourite aspect of golf is.
Kelln has been golfing for the past 40 years of his life; 25 of those years have been spent golfing at White Bear, where he now plays almost exclusively.
As the lives of most in the world have been upturned, and seemingly everything has seen changes to its practices due to COVID-19, golfing has seemed to stay relatively the same.
“Well, it was the most normal part of my life.” says Kelln.
Kelln was able to play 85 rounds last year. While there were a few notable changes in practice during tee times and when it came to players retrieving their balls, golf was business as usual for the most part.
While Kelln has been a long-time player of the sport due to personal interest, it’s been the people that he has played with and the people who he has met over the years that have made it worthwhile.
“I should give special thanks to a fellow named Larry Palmer who is the greens superintendent who does a wonderful job of keeping the course in very good condition.” says Kelln.
“The general manager is very welcoming and supportive of the golf members. He is always there to greet you with a smile and engage you in conversation.”
Kelln says that he is a regular at the White Bear Golf Course for not only the quality of the greens and friendliness of the staff, but also for convenience. Kelln owns a cottage in White Bear that is located approximately three or so minutes from the course.
While the golf course at White Bear is his most frequented course, Kelln also recognizes and enjoys other courses in the area.
“Another thing I’d say is that we’re very blessed down in our area. Kenosee has a very nice golf course as well and Carlyle has a nice nine-hole golf course so there’s nice golfing options in the area”
