The Weyburn Red Wings won both of their home weekend games before seven players headed off to play in the MJHL-SJHL showcase on Monday and Tuesday.
The Wings hosted the Kindersley Klippers on Friday evening, and defeated them 3-1 in front of 700 fans at Crescent Point Place.
The Wings opened the scoring in the first period with a powerplay goal by centreman Landon Walters. He had been fed a pass by Dexter Robinson and Cole Woodliffe, who passed it backwards between his legs through the crease, and Walters one-timed it to score at 7:32.
Right-winger Cade Kowalski scored a powerplay goal early in the second period, on assists by Ty Brown and Ben Hiltz, and Kindersley answered with a goal at 17:28.
The Red Wings clinched the win with a third-period empty-net goal by Jeremy Velazquez, with assists to Erik Olson and Woodliffe.
Goaltender Arik Weersink had the victory in net, facing 33 shots to 23 shots on the Klippers net.
The Yorkton Terriers came to visit on Saturday evening, and the Red Wings edged them out 2-1 in front of 648 fans.
There was no scoring in the game until late in the second period, when defenceman Olson scored on the powerplay with assists from Hiltz and Mike Eskra.
The Red Wings notched their second goal on the powerplay in the third period, when defenceman Carson Scheschuk scored with assists from Walters and Dylan McCabe.
Weersink was again between the pipes for Weyburn, facing 34 shots, with Yorkton’s goalie also facing 34 shots.
The two wins put the Red Wings two points behind the Estevan Bruins in the Viterra Division, with 48 points to the Bruins’ 50 points, as the teams headed into the showcase set of games.
The Red Wings who were selected for the showcase included defencemen Dylan McCabe and Jevon Schwean, and forwards Ben Hiltz, Cade Kowalski and Jordan Kazymyra. All five played on Team Schwartz, which featured players 18 and under, and was one of three teams of SJHL players.
Two other Red Wings, captain Mike Eskra and defenceman Erik Olson, played on Team Kunitz for the SJHL.
In the first game of the showcase, Team Schwartz of the SJHL defeated the MJHL team by a score of 5-1. Kowalski earned two points, with a goal and an assist, and Biltz had an assist on Kowalski’s goal.
The SJHL’s Team Kunitz played on Monday evening, and won 4-2 over the MJHL’s Team Belfour. There were no points for the Red Wings players on this team.
The SJHL will be back to their regular schedule on the weekend, with the Red Wings playing a home-and-home pair with Estevan. Weyburn will be in Estevan on Friday night, and will host the Bruins at Crescent Point Place on Saturday night, with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m.
