WEYBURN – Several Weyburn area athletes came away with medals, with one setting national records, at the Saskatchewan Powerlifting championships over the weekend, hosted in Weyburn at Knox Hall with 70 lifters taking part.
Eight members of Weyburn’s Olympia In Depth powerlifting team won gold medals, along with three silver medals and a bronze medal.
Winning gold and setting three national records was Natalie Butz, who lifted 145 kg in the squat lift, 100 kg in bench press and 151 kg in the dead lift event.
Two provincial records were set as well, with Mykelle Doud setting a provincial record for her category in bench press, as she lifted 76 kg. She also did 130 kg in the squat lift and 135 kg in deadlift, and came away with a gold medal.
The other provincial record was set by Kieran Hamel, who only competed in the bench press event, and lifted 100 kg, winning a gold medal.
Owen Istace won gold, lifting 170 kg in the squat lift, 135 kg in the bench press, and 272.5 kg in the deadlift event.
Mikayla Drullette won gold, lifting 77.5 kg in the squat lift, 45 kg in the bench press, and 100 kg in the deadlift event.
Michaela Selinger won gold, lifting 90 kg in the squat lift, 60 kg in the bench press and 110 kg in the deadlift.
Krista Sandney won gold, lifting 90 kg in the squat lift, 55 kg in the bench press and 145 kg in the deadlift.
The other gold went to Hudson Fowler, who competed in the youth event. He lifted 50 kg in the squat lift, 35 kg in bench press, and 55 kg in the deadlift.
Joselene Keating won silver, lifting 117.5 kg in the squat lift, 72.5 kg in bench press, and 132.5 kg in the deadlift.
Franki Nault won silver, competing just in the bench press competition. She lifted 45 kg.
Mickenzie Whitford took home a silver, lifting 105 kg in the squat lift, 62.5 kg in the bench press, and 115 kg in the deadlift.
Vicki Leas won bronze, lifting 112.5 kg in the squat lift, 65 kg in the bench press, and 137.5 kg in the deadlift event.
Larissa Smeltzer won fourth place in her category, lifting 120 kg in the squat lift, 70 kg in the bench press, and 142.5 kg in the deadlift.
Michelle Buchanan placed fifth, lifting 112.5 kg in the squat, 75 kg in bench press and 140 kg in the deadlift. Melissa Wright finished in sixth place, lifting 102.5 kg in the squat event, 60 kg in bench press, and 115 kg in the deadlift.
Most of the local athletes are working toward competing at the Western Canadian regional championships, to be held in Moose Jaw on March 6-10, 2024.
