After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, Elvin Stefan Haupstein passed away on August 1, 2013 at Weyburn surrounded by his family. Elvin was born on May 13, 1936 to Adolf and Pauline Haupstein on a farm halfway down the Halbrite grid (SE 13 - 7 - 12 W2). He was the second youngest of seven children, three who died in infancy. Elvin grew up on the dairy farm near Weyburn and graduated from Weyburn Collegiate in 1954. After high school he attended the University of Saskatchewan where he received his BScA in 1958. Elvin played basketball for the U of S Huskies. During this time in Saskatoon, Elvin married his high school sweetheart Nellie Ruth Lynn in 1957. They were happily married for 56 years. After graduation Elvin returned to the original family dairy farm located on the outskirts of Weyburn. As the city grew the dairy had to be relocated and in 1964 was moved to its present location. The first barn had a double four herringbone parlor which served until 2001 when a new barn with a double twelve parallel parlor was built. The current dairy is operated by Elvin's son Darren. Elvin had a keen interest in the Dairy industry and served on the Board of Directors for Dairy Producers Co-op and later became Chairman of the Board of Dairy Producers which became AgriFoods International. Through these positions he became a representative of the Dairy Industry on numerous committees and boards. These positions kept Elvin actively involved for a span of 40 plus years. In March of 1993, Elvin was presented with the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada in recognition of significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada. Elvin is survived by his wife, Nellie of Weyburn, and their children, Deb (Mark Johanson) of Stockholm: Deanna (Steve) Peddle of Wawota and their children, Rebecca (Dion) Huel, Brooke, Mackenzie: Heather (Jim Yeaman) of Weyburn: Teresa (Tom) Richards of Kenosee, and their children, Stephanie, Clayton, Cheyenne: Cindy (Dennis) Mainil of Weyburn, and their children, Colby, Dalton, Branden, Dustin, Tabitha: Darren (Pam) Haupstein, Weyburn, and their children Nivay, Emily, Jaylynn, Karter: sisters Erna (Walter) Dreger of Saskatoon: Leanne Kew of Edmonton, Delbert of Australia and sister-in-law Darlene Haupstein of Parksville, BC. and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Elvin was predeceased by his parents Adolf and Pauline Haupstein, three infant siblings, brother-in-law, John Kew and nephew Delmar Dreger. A funeral service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church of Weyburn on August 10 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Canadian Cancer society or a charity of your choice. The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jesse Warren and the Palliative Care team at the Weyburn General Hospital for their compassionate care and understanding.
