Margaret Theresa Balzer late of Weyburn, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the age of 99. Margaret was born October 14, 1917 on the Franzem farm southwest of Minton. She was the third child of Joseph Franzem and Eva Young who immigrated to Canada from Hungary. Margaret took her schooling at Jutland School, which was a mile from the farm. In the summer she walked to school with her siblings and the winter by horse and sled. On Sept. 25, 1939 she married Nicholas Balzer from the Khedive area. A son, Harold was born January 29, 1943. They lived on the farm north east of Khedive for many years and in 1970 moved to Pangman after purchasing the Nick Balzer Sr. home. After the death of her husband in 1991, Harold, who was handicapped moved to the Radville Marian Home and Margaret sold her house and moved into Golden Heritage in Radville so she could see her son daily. In 1997, Margaret and Harold moved back to Pangman in the new Deep South Personal Care Home. They enjoyed many years together playing cards, bingo, bowling, etc. In November 2010, they made the move to the Weyburn Special Care Home due to the level of care and again spent many, many hour’s together playing cards, etc. and lived across the hall from each other. Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Eva Franzem; her husband, Nick; sisters, Annie and Mary; brothers; John, Joe and Carl; her sisters-in-law, Margaret Franzem, Margaret Fellner, Frances Balzer, Katie Balzer, Aline Balzer and Florence Wight; brothers-in-law, Ed Johnston, Andrew Bernecker, Max Fellner, Harold Balzer and Bruce Wight. She is survived by her son, Harold, sisters-in-law, Violet Balzer and Annie Balzer and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 7, at 1:30 p.m. from Holy Angels Catholic Church in Pangman, with Father Anthony Pangan presiding. Pallbearers were: Ed Roberts, Fred Liggett, Norman Lee, Darcy Barth, Brad Fellner and Ken Balzer. Interment took place at Pangman Cemetery. For family and friends so wishing, donations in memory of Margaret may be made to Deep South Personal Care Home Ladies Auxiliary at Box 197, Pangman, Saskatchewan S0C 2C0 or Weyburn Special Care Home Ladies Auxiliary at 704-5th Street, Weyburn, Saskatchewan S4H 1A3.
