ESTEVAN - Estevan's former mayor will have his name attached to a park in the city.

At Monday night's meeting, Estevan city council approved naming the Churchill Park in south-central Estevan to Roy Ludwig Churchill Park in honour of Ludwig, who was the Energy City's mayor from 2012 until 2024, and a city councillor from 1994-2012.

In his nomination submission, Travis Frank, who was a city councillor from 2016 to 2024, noted that Ludwig provided "historic contributions" to the community. Frank selected the Churchill Park because it underwent a redesign completed in Ludwig's final year as mayor.

Frank added the naming aligns with established recognitions for other parks, such as Dennis Moore Centennial Park and Mel Murray Cactus Park.

Coun. Shelly Veroba said she is glad Frank took the time to submit the application, because she has had three former councillors – Moore, Trevor Knibbs and Greg Hoffort – reach out to her about honouring Ludwig.

"I think this would be an appropriate spot to put Roy Ludwig's name on a park," said Veroba.

Coun. Dave Elliott voted against the motion. While he didn't object to a recognition for Ludwig, he said he has a problem with the city's policy on naming of parks. The policy asks for a historic contribution, and Elliott believes there are organizations like the United Way Estevan and the Knights of Columbus that have made more historical contributions.

Coun. Matthew Dubowski abstained from the vote.
