ESTEVAN - Members of the Estevan Mermaids Artistic Swimming Club attended the Sandra Roberts Provincial Championships in late January in Regina.
This was the club’s first full competition of the season with both figures and routines. The athletes performed well and showed improvement in their figures. This also was the first time their routines were performed in a large, deep pool and in front of an audience.
In novice figures, Kayden Pukas was second with a score of 47.2464; Brinley Groenveld, third, 45.1449; Eva Myers, fourth, 43.9952; and Lexington Beaudry, fifth, 39.2802.
As for youth figures with exhibition, Isabelle Pyra was 17th with a score of 52.7719 and Rowyn Shier was 18th at 52.4474. Other Mermaids entered were Sierra Mantei, 50.3889; Ava Donison, 46.2982; Mahaley Fonstad, 44.1901; and Rory Miller, 42.0702.
In routines, Lexington Beaudry and Eva Myers were first in novice duet free with a championship score of 43.9706, thanks to a routine score of 45.5258 and a figures' score of 41.6377.
In youth team free routine, Estevan was fifth with a championship score of 57.0342, thanks to a figures' score of 47.5698 and a routine mark of 63.3438.
Rowyn Shier was fifth in junior free solo routine with a score of 79.5550. Sierra Mantei was fifth in junior tech solo routine with a score of 117.5175.
Sarah Greening and Sarah Pyra were second in their junior duet free routine with a score of 60.4513.
The Estevan Mermaids competitive athletes are coached by Amber Mantei and Kelsey Potoma.
The championship is named in honour of Roberts, who enjoyed a long and illustrious career in artistic swimming. She was a swimmer, coach, judge and administrator. She attended five Olympic Games, one as a member of the Canadian delegation, three as an International Swimming Federation official and one as a judge. She was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
