The EPS is requesting that residents use extreme caution if choosing to use fentanyl and other substances.

ESTEVAN - The Estevan Police Service has issued a public safety advisory after drug overdoses occurred in Saskatchewan.

A news release from the EPS says emergency service providers in Saskatoon, Regina and other locations in Saskatchewan have recently reported significant increases in overdoses related to fentanyl and other illicit drug consumption.

"Current reports indicate that the potency of fentanyl in many of the overdoses is greater than has been previously seen in these jurisdictions, and that analysis of the substances has identified other chemicals present that may not be counteracted by naloxone (narcan) administration."

The EPS is requesting that residents use extreme caution if choosing to use these substances, and to be aware that fentanyl and other chemicals are frequently found present in other recreational drugs that the user may not be aware of.

In the event of a suspected drug overdose, the EPS asks for people to call 911 immediately. Naloxone might not be effective to reverse the physical effects of the drug(s) and emergency medical assistance will be required to prevent an overdose from becoming fatal.

Anyone with information about trafficking in these or other illicit substances is asked to contact the EPS at 306-634-4767 or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
