ESTEVAN - The Olivia Fonstad rink, competing out of the Estevan Curling Club, finished third at the CurlSask U20 women's curling provincials, which were held from Feb. 5-9 at Regina's Highland Curling Rink.
The Fonstad entry opened with a 9-8 win in an extra end over Chloe Semeniuk. Semeniuk led 6-3 through five ends and 8-6 after nine, but Fonstad scored two in 10 and stole one in the extra end to rally for the win.
Their next game was a 10-8 victory over Jenna Pomedli. The two teams were tied at 6-6 through six ends, but the local squad scored twice in the seventh and stole one in the eighth on its way to the win.
Up next was a 7-3 loss to Ava Beausoleil. The Beausoleil rink scored three times in the eighth end to take a 7-2 lead, and Fonstad scored just once in the ninth end.
Fonstad qualified for the playoffs with an 11-5 win over Chloe Johnston. Fonstad scored five times in the fourth end to take over the game, and after scoring the final four points from the sixth to eighth ends, the two teams shook hands.
Fonstad met Beausoleil again in the first playoff game, and this time fell 9-5. Trailing 7-2 through seven ends, Fonstad made it interesting with three in the eighth end, but Beausoleil put the game away with two in the ninth.
The final game for Fonstad was a 12-4 loss to Pomedli. Fonstad led 4-2 through six ends, but Pomedli rattled off 10 unanswered points, including five in the seventh end.
Other members of the team were third Amy Fradette, second April McMillen and lead Andrea Fradette. Andrea Fradette was selected to the tournament's Pharmasave all-star team. Bob Doerr was the Fonstad rink's coach.
Also, Heidi Fradette, who has competed out of Estevan in the past, skipped a team that competed out of Saskatoon's Sutherland Curling Club. They finished with a 1-3 record.
