ESTEVAN — The communities of Estevan and Weyburn will bring back the Golden Garbage Can competition this year.

Coun. Kirsten Walliser announced the return of the clean-up showdown during the April 28 meeting of Estevan city council. Walliser noted the City of Weyburn had asked about the return of the contest and the City of Estevan has agreed. She is the city's representative.

Reading a letter from the two communities, Walliser said the competition is a "friendly, fun tradition between the communities of Estevan and Weyburn."

"This light-hearted rivalry is about community pride, cleanliness and showing the best of what our cities have to offer," said Walliser. "The Golden Garbage Can competition promotes residential cleanup, encouraging everyone to take part in sprucing up their homes, yards and neighbourhoods."

On June 9, a panel of five judges will tour Estevan and Weyburn, taking in the efforts of each community.

The winning community receives the Golden Garbage Can. In the past, the silver rake has been presented to the runner-up community.

"Let's come together, have some fun and show how much pride we take in our community," said Walliser. "Whether it's pulling weeds, picking litter or planting flowers, every little effort counts. Together we can make a big difference, and maybe even bring home the coveted can."

The City of Estevan's annual Operation Clean Sweep campaign will run from May 20-23, with the cleanup of entrances, residential areas, and city-owned boulevards, parks, medians and natural areas.  A free landfill weekend will be May 24 and 25 for City of Estevan residents.
