ESTEVAN - The United Way Estevan is now accepting projects and looking for volunteers for its annual Day of Caring, which is slated for May 28.
Speaking at the United Way's annual general meeting on March 26, Day of Caring committee co-chairs Wendy Gustafson and Shelly Veroba, said it's a great event that brings people together.
Gustafson told the crowd there wouldn't be a Day of Caring without the efforts of the people at the meeting and others. The Day of Caring is an opportunity for the United Way's board, member agencies, community impact projects and others to help those who aren't able to complete tasks on their own.
"A lot of people, they can't get the yardwork done, they can't get the house cleaning done," said Gustafson.
"We do a little bit of everything to help people. These people support us at the telethon. We know that, and so it's just really nice to have the opportunity to give back to them," she said.
People will volunteer for a few hours during the morning and/or the afternoon. Gustafson said they put in a lot of hard work, but it's a lot of fun and it's a good way to meet people while spending some time with them. Some of the people they encounter don't have a lot of work to be completed, but they are happy to have someone come to their home, provide some assistance and visit.
Veroba reminded the crowd there isn't a project that's too small.
"There's probably a reason you're doing it," said Veroba. "Maybe the person you're putting the project in for is sick. Maybe they just can't get things done. We're willing to take a look at all projects."
If they don't have the capabilities of doing the project, they will reach out to somebody in the community who can provide their expertise.
"It's just a great day. It's a day of giving back. So please put your projects in, and please volunteer. We need lots of volunteers."
A barbecue lunch is served that day at the Estevan Alliance Church for the volunteers.
In 2024, the Day of Caring had 47 projects completed and 163 volunteers lending a helping hand.
