ESTEVAN - One outdoor rink in Estevan is open for the winter, and another will be open soon.

The outdoor rink in the Rusty Duce Playpark, which is tended to by the Estevan Lions Club, is now open, although the shack was not open initially. It is slated to be ready for Dec. 27.

The Audrey Fichter Memorial Arena at the Kin Hillside Playpark is slated to open in the next few days.

In a press release, the City of Estevan said it is so fortunate to have community groups like the Estevan Lions Club, the Estevan Kinsmen Club and the Estevan Kinettes Club that volunteer their time, dedication and hard work towards giving citizens a place to play and exercise.

It takes many hours in the freezing cold to build millimeters of ice, but it takes mere seconds to destroy their efforts when you try to use the facilities before the ice is thick enough for use.

The city asks the public to be kind and stay off the ice if it’s not ready.

Additionally, the city’s maintenance team has once again brought back crokicurl to the forecourt of Affinity place. Final touches have been happening, with the ice anticipated to be ready on Dec. 27.

The Westview area rink will not be open this year as the city is encountering issues with heating systems.
