ASSINIBOIA - Shurniak Art Gallery will present “Meeting for Teas: On the Road to Decolonization”, a joint project with the University of Saskatchewan.
The “Meeting for Tea: On the Road to Decolonization” will include a celebration of teas will occur during a three-day event, September 15 to 17.
Vancouver-based Tea Master, Bryan Mulvihill will introduce audiences of all ages to multicultural tea gatherings in his interactive and entertaining style.
Lakota artist and educator, Kim Soo Goodtrack will lead an interpretive walk/talk on Indigenous teas. Saskatoon-based Xiao Han and Qiming Sun will perform tea ceremonies drawing inspiration from the scent of food to the spirits of their Chinese ancestors. There’s even a shared tea ceremony with Kerala, India artist Aryakrishnan R. via zoom.
Other topics addressed will be the health aspects of teas with local herbalist Alma Lessard, tea traditions offered as sympathy, and historical tea practices.
A Mad Hatter tea with costumes and puppet show will be presented for children ages five years and older. Complimentary samples of tea and treats will be served at each session.
A unique art exhibition, “Just Looking: Tea Gatherings on the Road to Decolonization” will accompany the activities.
All events are free, everyone welcome. Residents are encouraged to mark calendars and join the conviviality and fun at one or more gathering for teas from around the world at the Shurniak Art Gallery. Tea is the world’s most consumed beverage after water! Who knew??!
