JAMES SMITH CREE NATION — RCMP say there are 10 people dead in 13 locations and 15 people taken to hospital after a rash of stabbings Sunday that began on James Smith Cree Nation.
RCMP add that there may be even more injured than they know of as some people may have taken themselves to hospital. The alert was expanded across the prairie provinces at 11:25 a.m.
Suspects being sought are Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson. Damien Sanderson is five foot seven and 155 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Myles Sanderson is six foot one and 200 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. The suspects may have been seen last in Regina, according to RCMP.
In a press conference at 3:40 p.m. Sunday in Regina, Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, the Commanding Officer of Saskatchewan RCMP said one of the dead was in Weldon and nine were on James Smith Cree Nation. RCMP believe some of the attacks were targeted and some were random.
Blackmore said police had received a report that suspects might have been seen driving in the Arcola Avenue Area in Regina around 11:45 a.m. Police do not know if they have changed vehicles, but the suspects were originally thought to be driving a black Nissan Rogue with Saskatchewan licence plate 119 MPI.
Because they have access to a vehicle, the alert was expanded to the neighbouring provinces. The alert first went out to the James Smith Cree Nation and area at 7:12 a.m. The alert asked residents in the area to seek immediate shelter/shelter in place: "Do not leave a secure location. Use caution allowing others into your residence. Do not approach suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitchhikers. Report suspicious persons, emergencies or info to 911. Do not disclose police locations."
The alert was expanded to the entire province at 8:20 a.m. and to Alberta and Manitoba just before noon.
Police continue to urge the public to be on the lookout and call 911 if the suspects are seen but do not approach them. Current alert instructions are: "Do not leave a secure location. Use caution allowing others into your residence. Do not approach suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitchhikers. Report emergencies or info to 911."
