MOOSOMIN — Hugh Auchstaetter is seeking his first term on Moosomin Town Council, saying he is eager to jump in and create some change.

“I felt that change was needed on council, so I decided to run,” he said. “I’m not one of those people that believe in bellyaching about stuff if you’re not willing to step up to the plate and make changes. I figured I’d run and see how it goes.”

Infrastructure and encouraging investment in low-rental housing for seniors are a couple of his top priorities if elected.

“I feel there’s a lack of affordable housing for seniors with limited, restricted incomes,” Auchstaetter said.

During his time in Melville, Auchstaetter was highly involved in sports, spending time coaching minor hockey and ball. The local business owner also has many years of experience in the Occupational Health and Safety realm, first as co-chair in his previous job, and also on the OH&S committee in his current role.

“I’ve now been employed with Nutrien for 14 years, and I’ve been on the OH&S committee there,” Auchstaetter said. “I’m the grievance chairperson for our union local out at the mine.”

Auchstaetter says he plans to retire soon, allowing for the time commitment a councillor role would require.
