Bitcoin scam costs victim over $2,700 in Estevan

ESTEVAN — Members received a report of a successful scam on Dec. 1. The caller had the victim purchase bitcoin and transfer the money to the thief. The victim reported to have lost over $2,700.

The police remind the public that if you are being asked to pay for something via bitcoin deposits or by buying gift cards to use as payment it is likely a scam.

The same day members also attended to a south end residence due to a noise complaint. The homeowner was warned under the bylaw.

A local taxi service came to the police station as they had an intoxicated female passenger who wasn't able to give her address to the driver. The individual was taken to the police station and a family member was contacted and attended to pick her up a short time later.

Police also responded to a report of criminal harassment. The individual reported receiving repeated messages over social media. The matter is under investigation.

Members attended to a disturbance and managed to separate the parties for a few hours until they were able to act more reasonably with each other.

Police were called to a residence in the Hillside area of the city to a report of a dispute between occupants of the home. The parties were divided up and avoided each other for the remainder of the evening.

Police also attended to a second residence due to a noise complaint. The homeowner was warned under the bylaw.

Police arrested an Estevan man on outstanding warrants. He was found to be extremely intoxicated and was lodged in cells until he was sober.

In other recent police news, on Nov. 29, officers received a complaint about an individual's driving on a parking lot. The matter is still under investigation and charges are pending.

The same day members received a complaint about vehicles failing to stop for a school bus that was stopped loading/unloading passengers. The matter is under investigation. The police remind the public that when a school bus is stopped, and the red lights are flashing, it is an offence to pass the school bus from any direction. All traffic around the school bus must come to a stop and wait for the bus to move on before doing so themselves.

Officers received a complaint about a man asking for money and possibly attempting to open car doors parked at businesses. The individual was located and identified. He was warned for his behaviour. Police request that the public report suspicious activity and further ensure your vehicles are properly secured before leaving them unattended.

The EPS was called to a local restaurant to remove an unwanted guest on Nov. 30. The individual left when asked by the police.

The same day, police received a request from the Swift Current Detachment of the RCMP to attempt to locate an individual in Estevan wanted in questioning for uttering threats in Swift Current. Police did locate the individual in Estevan and advised Swift Current. The matter is still under investigation.

Members also received a report of failing to remain at the scene of an accident. After the collision, the driver gave a false name and false reporting details to the other driver. The individual was located and received two summary offence tickets to appear in court in Estevan in early 2024.

Police received a report of theft of mail. The individual is accusing a previous landlord of keeping mail that arrives at the old address. The matter is under investigation.

On Dec. 3, members were called to a local hotel, where it was reported that an Estevan man was causing a disturbance and acting strange. Police attended and determined the individual was extremely intoxicated. He was arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

Police received a report of suspicious vehicles behind the Scotsburn mall. Members attended and were not able to locate the vehicles described.

Officers also received a report of mischief to a vehicle overnight. The vehicle was parked in the Westview area of the city.

The EPS received a request to assist EMS with what was reported as a female in cardiac arrest. Police attended and found a 58-year-old Estevan woman who was not in cardiac arrest but extremely intoxicated. The EMS was no longer required.

Police also responded to a second call for assistance from EMS. Members attended to find a 53-year-old woman high on drugs. She was not in any medical distress, so police continued to assist her to settle down for the night.

Police received a total of 50 calls for service from Dec. 1-4.
