A tribute has been placed at the front entrance to city hall in Estevan, in honour of the 215 Indigenous children whose remains were found near the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.
More than 50 children’s shoes and boots have been placed at city hall. The tiny footwear has become a way to visualize the magnitude of what has been lost.
The shoes will eventually be moved to the evergreen tree in front of city hall, so that they are not damaged by precipitation.
Also, the flags in front of city hall are currently at half mast, and will remain until June 8. They will be at half mast for 215 hours.
Other tributes have been popping up around the community, and other flags are now at half-mast.
The discovery last week was also covered at Monday night's meeting of Estevan city council, with several tributes by council members.
