The dialysis unit at St. Joseph's Hospital celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Friday.

Current and former patients gathered with nurses to enjoy lunch, birthday cake and socializing.

The dialysis unit opened in 2007 after years of local lobbying to have such a service at the hospital. Before the unit opened, patients were forced to travel to Regina for treatment.

Kelly Storlie worked as a nurse from the unit's opening in 2007 until her retirement this year. She continues to work at the unit in a casual capacity.

She said the patients are very appreciative of the care they receive. Patients praised the care they receive at the facility as well.

The dialysis unit has up to 18 patients on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with nine patients in the morning and nine in the afternoon.

"We've had two successful transplants happen since we've been here," Storlie said proudly.

Next week's edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
