ESTERHAZY — A request from the Esterhazy Community Daycare for an abatement of the municipal portion of taxes came before council during last week’s meeting. Councillor William Gale declared a conflict of interest for the item, and exited the meeting during this portion.
In the past, the daycare had been successful in being approved to receive an abatement, initially as a way to help pay down a high-interest loan when the group was first starting out.
Last summer, a similar request was heard by council with a motion made during the Aug. 6 meeting to approve the request to abate the municipal portion of the 2024 tax levy on their property for that tax year.
Councillor Maggie Rowland noted how council of the day initially sought to help the non-profit, in part to ensure the much-needed service would remain in town.
“This was supposed to go towards their loans so that they could keep operating,” she said.
Ultimately, the item was tabled to a future budget meeting for further discussion.
Motions made for building inspector, board of revision
Council approved Professional Building Inspectors to conduct building inspections for the town. The appointment is done annually and the Town of Esterhazy has been working with PBI since 2011.
Council also approved an annual contract with Western Municipal Consulting, who provide appeal services to municipalities in the province. Through four separate motions, Council appointed Western Municipal Consulting Ltd. to manage the Board of Revision process; that the Board of Revision Secretary be Nicolle Hoskins; the Development Appeals Board; and the Development Appeals Board Secretary be Claudette McGuire. The appointments are for a terms of Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2025.
Membership renewed
Council approved the renewal of their membership in the East Central Transportation Planning Committee.
