The red serges were out, boots polished arms offered on Valentine's Day. For the first time in 14 years, the Estevan RCMP held a ball, which saw participation from most of the surrounding detachments.
The event acted as a fundraiser for Southeast Regional Victim Services. It was successful enough that they are talking of another sometime within the next year.
Shari Sutter, who works with the Estevan RCMPS and was one of the organizers, said, “It was really good.”
Detachments attending included Estevan, Carnduff, Carlyle, Moosomin, Regina Depot, Regina Headquarters, Estevan Police Service as well as local conservation officers.
The Ball took place at the Beefeater Plaza, and 122 people attended. They had been aiming for closer to 175, but Sutter said it made for a more intimate evening. The festivities included a fallen officer ceremony, and a long-standing tradition surrounding serving port.
“We’re certainly thinking of hosing another ball within the next year,” she said, noting that later this fall, or perhaps next spring are being considered.
While they don’t have final figures yet on the funds raised, some of the money will be used to take care of Beaumont, the trauma dog. Money will also go towards the expenses of victims of crime.
