REGINA — Many Regina residents gathered together Monday to join in honouring missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, during a Sisters in Spirit event in the Queen City.
Family members, community leaders and members of the Regina Police service took part in the walk, which began at police headquarters and concluded at the medicine wheel installation across from the RCMP Heritage Centre.
Participants carried 41 roses, each tied with the name of a missing woman or girl from Regina and area, during their trek down Dewdney Avenue.
The roses were laid inside the medicine wheel at the walk’s conclusion, followed by a prayer from Elder Diane Kaiswatum.
Oct. 4 is annually celebrated as a day to honour the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, with vigils and walks taking place across Canada.
Regina typically hosts a candlelight vigil, but organizers decided to instead host the walk after consulting with Indigenous elders.
