Former local, Darren "Red" Neuberger was in Weyburn recently to distribute his new book, "Let's Talk About It - Inspiring Stories from Young Adult Cancer Survivors."
The book features a collection of stories from young people, aged 15 to 45, who are battling cancer. Neuberger said he wrote the book because of his own experience with cancer and the lack of support for young people with the disease.
"I spent five months in a hospital in Calgary and there was no support for young adults," said Neuberger.
Neuberger explained that the challenges that confront a young person with cancer are different than the challenges that older adults face.
"Our social needs are so much different," said Neuberger. "You can't finish school; you can't have children; you can't have a career - your life is on hold."
The book contains 40 stories from young adults struggling with cancer. Neuberger said he was able to get in touch with these people through online support groups and Facebook.
"About 10,000 young Canadians are diagnosed every year, 2,800 won't survive," said Neuberger. "I hope this book will help get them notice because their needs are different."
More importantly, Neuberger added, is the fact that the stories and insights of the young people featured in the book are inspirational and he wants it to inspire others.
"I hope it gives them a little hope and lets them know that there are others out there like us and you can survive this," said Neuberger.
Now residing in Lethbridge, Alberta, Neuberger has not had any symptoms of leukemia for five years and his doctor has deemed him cancer-free.
