City council states it does not have any significant influence over the future direction of a new hospital, but wishes to levy a hospital tax.
It would be prudent for the city council on behalf of the residents of Weyburn and before levying this tax to obtain a statement from the Health Region and the Minister of Health that Weyburn will not lose any existing services to other jurisdictions.
Weyburn is growing and a new hospital with enhanced equipment and services is needed.
Weyburn residents deserve to know prior to any tax levy that Weyburn will not be losing the ER, acute care or any other current services to another community such as Estevan, making Estevan the central location and forcing Weyburn residents to travel there or to Regina to obtain the lost services.
Let them be clear on their intent and make a public statement to this effect before any hospital tax is levied in Weyburn.
Until this matter is resolved, I do not support the hospital tax levy. I do not wish to donate without knowing the terms.
A hospital is nothing but a token shell with beds if critical services are removed, so let the Minister of Health and our Health Region spokesperson state publicly that no services will be reduced or lost in Weyburn.
