BIENFAIT - A parade was one of the early highlights of the annual Canada Day celebrations in Bienfait.
The parade attracted many participants who were eager to be involved and wish Canada a happy 156th birthday. Floats, trucks, heavy equipment, antique vehicles, horses, emergency vehicles and more were part of the parade. Other participants walked the route.
They tossed candy and other treats to the delight of the children who gathered to watch.
A large crowd gathered to watch the parade.
Many of the participants and spectators had Canadian flags or were decked out in red and white.
The parade had to be rerouted from its traditional path due to a water main break on one of the roads, but that didn't deter people from attending.
A pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. kicked off the festivities. Activities are happening in Bienfait throughout the day. The Bienfait Fire Department will have a cabaret starting at 6 p.m. The annual fireworks spectacular is slated to begin at dusk.
Other communities in the southeast are also marking Canada Day with events.
The next edition of the Mercury will have more coverage of Canada Day in Bienfait.
