WEYBURN -- In celebration of National Police Week, the Weyburn Review/ Weyburn This Week interviewed Cpl. Jason Rutten, with the Weyburn Police Services. National Police Week will be observed across Canada from May 15 to 21. This special week to recognize the efforts of law enforcement officers began in 1970 as a way for the police to connect with their communities and to increase awareness about the services they provide.

How long have you served with the WPS?
I was hired November 1st, 2001, attended the Saskatchewan Police College in Regina from January-May, 2002, and completed my 20th year November 1st, 2021 with the Weyburn Police Service.

What do you view as the most important day-to-day responsibilities of Police members?
The most important day-to-day responsibility of any Emergency Service Personal is ensuring the safety of those in our community.  Getting to know the people in the community, being visible and taking the time to stop and talk with those individuals, is also very important.

What is your favourite kind of community interaction?
My favourite kind of community interaction is stopping to visit with people while out of the office.  It may be a quick stop on the side of the road, pulling into a parking lot to talk, walking around schools, sporting events, parks or while walking through different businesses.

Why did you choose a career with the Police?
My Grandpa was a member of the Regina Police Service, an Uncle, Cousin and my two older brothers were/are members of the RCMP, so there may be a bit of the Police bug in our family. Policing allows members to spend a lot of time outside, compared to other professions where most/all of their time is spent inside.  Knowing that you can make a difference in someone’s life no matter how big or small that is.

What safety/law tip would you like to remind the citizens of Weyburn?
“If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is”.  We receive numerous calls of scammers trying to get money, pre-paid cards and personal information from people, unfortunately sometimes people fall prey to these scams, which result in some type of loss.
