REGINA — Recently passed amendments to the Saskatchewan Employment Act come into force on Jan. 1, giving workers more protections against sexual harassment in the workplace.
The legislation clarifies that the definition of harassment includes any unwelcome attention of a sexual nature, and expands protection to include contract workers and students and volunteers.
"This legislation will ensure that contract workers, students and volunteers can go to their jobs without concerns about being exposed to harassment," said Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan.
"We want to protect all workers from harassment and create safe, healthy workplaces."
Additional amendments remove the requirements for the Labours Relations Board to avoid including supervisors and employees from the same bargaining unit, and allows the board the authority to determine the appropriate bargaining unit.
Additionally, to comply with new COVID-19 vaccination regulations, employees will also now be able to choose to either show evidence of being fully vaccinated or a negative text at least every seven days.
