REGINA — Local organizers have planned a community vigil outside of the legislative building in Regina on the weekend, to honour the lives lost to COVID-19 during the pandemic.
On March 12, the public is invited to gather outside of the legislative assembly to stand in remembrance of those lost to COVID and to offer condolences to loved ones affected.
The vigil will begin at 1 p.m., with several religious leaders attending to offer prayers.
Those confirmed include Reverend Cam Fraser of Knox Metropolitan United Church, Father Brian Meredith of Holy Child Parish in the Archdiocese of Regina and Reverend Inkham Saeng Oudum with the Sadhananda Buddhist Vihara.
Indigenous Elder Lorna Standingready of White Bear First Nations will also be in attendance to offer words of prayer.
As of Feb. 26, a total of 1,135 individuals have died due to COVID, according to provincial data.
“That’s the entire population of Carnduff, or Grenfell, or Kerrobert,” said organizer Deb Nyczai. “It’s hard to fathom an entire community lost and the grief shared by the thousands of family members and friends who mourn them.”
The vigil will gather until 3 p.m. on Saturday, allowing for members of the community to come together.
“Please join us as we honour and remember these lives and offer our heartfelt condolences to their families and friends,” said Nyczai.
Updates regarding the vigil will be shared via a Facebook event, titled “A Vigil of Remembrance.”
