WEYBURN – The Weyburn Fire Department was dispatched to the Souris Valley area on Monday at 3:13 p.m., after reports of a fire west of the Riverwood subdivision.

Upon arrival, heavy brush fire was reported and gaining momentum to the east.

Responding crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

A City of Weyburn front-end loader assisted to create a fire guard. Crews were on the scene for several hours eliminating hot spots.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Weyburn Fire Department will check the area frequently, monitoring weather and wind conditions.

Fire crews included a fire engine, command vehicles, wildland truck, utility truck and water tanker. No occupied structures or personal property were damaged in the fire.

As the brush fire was near the residential area of Riverwood, police officers were on hand to ensure the public didn’t get too close to the area on fire.

“In an ongoing emergency situation, the public should avoid the affected area,” said Fire Chief Trent Lee. “This advisory is designed to protect the public and minimize their risk to injury or harm. Avoiding the area also provides emergency responders the space to operate efficiently and allocate resources effectively.”
