WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 71 calls for service during the week of January 30th through February 5th, resulting in a total of 24 charges. Of the charges, 14 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada , seven under the Controlled Drugs & Substances Act (CDSA), and three under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA).
The majority of criminal charges resulted from the execution of a search warrant on a residence within the city on Third Avenue South on Friday. Two adult females face several charges, including multiple charges of possessing and trafficking a controlled substance (fentanyl), possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing property obtained by crime, and failing to comply with conditions of their release.
Officers responded to a report of two individuals breaking into a residence and causing damage inside. The complainant also noted items that were stolen.
The culprits are known to the victim and previous incidents involving the same parties were under investigation at the time. One youth was charged with break, enter and theft, and one young adult was charged with break, enter and theft as well as causing property damage and two counts of failing to comply with a condition of his release. The young adult also had outstanding warrants for his arrest, which were executed on him while in police custody.
Officers responded to a medical emergency to assist EMS personnel on Wednesday afternoon with an individual suspected of experiencing a drug overdose. EMS personnel found the adult male to be unresponsive and were not able to revive him. The Weyburn Police Service extend their condolences to friends, family, and all loved ones. As a community, we hope to work together to prevent tragedies such as this.
A local business reported two separate incidents of theft from their store during the week. Both incidents involved young individuals who were identified and warned at the complainant’s request after returning to the store to pay for the items.
On Friday afternoon, a caller reporting an erratic driver resulted in an adult male being charged with impaired driving. The vigilant caller dialed 911 to Report Impaired Driving (RID) after observing the vehicle swerving and driving over the curb onto the sidewalk. The caller also provided a detailed description of the driver and the vehicle, which assisted officers with the investigation.
Officers also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals or bylaw concerns.
