WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 112 calls for service during the period of May 29 to June 4, and 58 charges were laid.
Police initiated a traffic stop on a driver suspected to be involved in a break, enter, and theft of firearms and ammunition from Yellow Grass on June 1. A 27-year-old female has been charged with 20 criminal charges including resisting arrest, breach of an undertaking (prohibited from possessing weapons, firearms, and ammunition), possession of break-in tools, break-and-enter of a residence with intent to steal firearms, possession of firearms for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a prohibited firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
The female was remanded in custody. Numerous firearms and ammunition is outstanding. The investigation is ongoing.
Later in the evening of June 1, police received a call about hit and run collision. The complainant was following the suspect vehicle. Police attempted at traffic stop, however, the suspect vehicle fled from police.
Due to community safety concerns, the suspect vehicle was not pursued. Additional calls were received of the same vehicle colliding with other vehicles and driving on its rims. Police located the vehicle behind a business.
A 19-year-old male was charged with flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired driving, driving without a valid license, operating an unregistered vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and numerous other provincial offences. The male also had an outstanding arrest warrant.
Weyburn Police Service members initiated a traffic stop northwest of the city on Highway 39 for a drug trafficking investigation on the evening of May 31. A 46-year-old male and a 68-year-old female were arrested without incident. The 46-year-old male has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, trafficking fentanyl, possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking, and breach of probation. He was remanded in custody, and the female was released without charge.
During the early hours of May 30th, police were dispatched to a downtown business after receiving a complaint of break and enter. Entry was not made, and the incident is still under investigation.
Again, on May 30th, Police and EMS were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision at Highway 39 and Moore Street. One driver was charged with driving without due care and attention.
Police and Weyburn RCMP were dispatched to a theft in progress from a business on 22nd Avenue on May 31. A 44-year-old female was located and arrested on Weyburn Police Service warrants for theft and charged by Weyburn RCMP for theft under $5,000.
Police attended a residence after receiving a report of an assault in the early morning of June 2. A 32-year-old man was arrested and charged with forcible confinement, assault, choking to overcome resistance, and mischief under $5,000. The man was remanded in custody.
Police initiated a traffic stop on Highway 39 near Government Road on June 3. A 32-year-old female was issued a three-day suspension for performing poorly during Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. The female was also charged with being in possession of unmarked tobacco.
Police responded to two incidents resulting in impaired driving-related charges on the evening of June 4. The first, police attended to a residence on Government Road South for a report of an unwelcome guest. Upon police arrival, the suspect had left, however, he returned to the residence while police were on scene. Police conducted alcohol screening, resulting in a 60-year-old male facing a charge of operating a vehicle while impaired.
In the second incident, police assisted Weyburn RCMP with a suspicious vehicle and persons in a yard near the Weyburn Golf Course. Police administered a mandatory alcohol screening demand on the 17-year-old female driver resulting in a warning. The female was issued a driver’s license suspension, the vehicle was impounded, and a ticket was issued for possessing, consuming, or having alcohol in a vehicle.
Throughout the week, police conducted numerous targeted crime prevention activities, with focus on traffic enforcement and property crime.
