Weyburn police investigate B&E to a business compound

The Weyburn Police Service received 57 calls for service during the week of Dec. 26 through to New Year’s Day, resulting in one charge under the Traffic Safety Act, and one Criminal Code charge.

Weyburn police had 57 calls for service from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, with two charges laid.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 57 calls for service during the week of Dec. 26 through to New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2023, resulting in one charge under the Traffic Safety Act, and one charge being laid under the Criminal Code.

Officers responded to a report of a break-and-enter on Dec. 28 into the compound at 921 Government Road. An employee had discovered the fence had been cut overnight sometime to gain access to the compound. Several trailers were parked in the compound. It’s unknown at this time if anything has been taken, and the investigation is continuing.

Members of the WPS were contacted by an employee of a business at the City Centre Mall on Dec. 30, indicating a theft had just occurred at the business. A suspect male fled on foot from the location in possession of the stolen item. Officers patrolled the area and located the suspect, and he was arrested in possession of the stolen item. The male was released on an undertaking with a court date scheduled for the end of February. The property was returned to the business.

The Weyburn Police Service was contacted by Moose Jaw Police Service on New Year’s Eve requesting assistance to investigate an in-custody death at their holding facility. Members of the WPS attended Moose Jaw as independent oversight to assist with the investigation.

The police received a report of a hit and run to a business causing property damage on Dec. 24. Through investigation officers were able to identify the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle. A summons was served to the driver of the offending vehicle as well as an inspection notice for vehicle equipment standards.

A member of the WPS conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of 3rd Street and Highway 39 on New Year’s Day at approximately 2:20 a.m. As a result of the traffic stop, an adult male driver was arrested for impaired driving. He was transported to the police station where he provided samples of his breath during a breathalyzer test. After failing both tests that had been administered, he was arrested for driving over the legal limit. The male was released for a future court date.

Christmas day was busy for the Weyburn Police Service. Cpl. Riley Doud’s D-Platoon cooked a large meal and delivered a special Christmas supper to those in need around Weyburn. All recipients of the special Christmas meal were pleased and thankful.

The evening proved very busy with officers assisting the Weyburn Fire Department on the city outskirts, as well as assisting medical staff with an assaultive patient, who fought medical staff and officers. The patient was restrained and transported from one medical facility to another for continuing medical care.

Later in the evening police were dispatched to assist EMS staff with a non-fatal overdose at a residence in central Weyburn.

WPS then received a call from a motorist that had gotten their vehicle stuck in the snow on Coteau Avenue. Officers attended and noted signs of impairment from the driver. The driver failed a standard field sobriety test, was subject to a blood demand for an impaired driving by drug investigation. The driver’s vehicle was impounded, and their license suspended.
