It was back before Christmas when the “Grinch” broke into the Weyburn Public Library, and lifted a number of electronic equipment valued at about $18,000. While the library staff was understandably devastated with such a large loss including video games, consoles, and a virtual reality headset amongst many other items, Colin Evans, Branch Supervisor was emotional as he spoke about how the community rallied around the library from that day and eventually raised funds to replace the equipment.
“It started with a $500 donation from the Weyburn Police Association,” said Evans at the Donator Appreciation event last Saturday afternoon at the library, “Then others stepped up and the support was overwhelming.” Evans, who became the head librarian just back in February of this year became an instant believer of the well-known Weyburn spirit of giving when others are in need or face a hardship.
With so many individuals and businesses stepping up to help, the library board of directors wanted to acknowledge the handful of larger donators with a special certificate of appreciation. Those groups or businesses included the Weyburn Young Fellow Club, Fairly Handy Guys Inc., Weyburn Young Fellow Wives, Weyburn Credit Union, New Age Electronics & Home Furnishings, New Age Motor Sports & Marine Inc., and the Weyburn Police Association. “It is so refreshing and hard to put into words how wonderfully the community rallied around the library like they did, “ shared Evans. “The library is such an important community space, and we are proud to be free and open to everyone.”
